What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a type of meditation or relaxation - sometimes referred to as ‘yogic sleep’. It is similar to regular meditation, but it is more structured in that the Yoga Nidra guide (me) talks you through the entire process.

Yoga nidra has been shown to have a soothing effect on the nervous system, can reduce stress and anxiety, promotes a peaceful relaxed state of mind and improves sleep. It gives you a chance to slow down and to ease yourself into a state of deep healing and restoration.

It works by gently guiding you through four main stages of brain activity (beta, alpha, theta and delta). In the end, the goal is to reach a deeply relaxed state – a bit like that magical point in between sleep and wakefulness. Some say that half an hour of yoga Nidra is the equivalent to 2 hours of deep restful sleep!

Unlike in other forms of meditation where you can remain seated, in Yoga Nidra / meditation you will lie down on your back in shavasana in a comfortable space (this can be your bed). The body relaxes deeply whist the mind remains inwardly aware and lucid (although if you fall asleep that’s ok too)!

A Yoga Nidra/meditation session can include:

Setting an ‘intention/affirmation’, attention to the breath, body scan, a guided visualisation to take you deeper into your journey of blissful relaxation.

What you need:
Blanket/duvet
Pillows or cushions (under your head, perhaps behind the knees or under the lower arms).
Eye mask (optional)

Find your comfortable place (your bed is ideal), get warm and cozy, snuggle up and dim the lights.
During the meditation you can switch the camera off or dim the light on your phone as you won’t be moving - you will just be listening.
I shall ‘mute’ participants during the practice to avoid background noise. There will be the option to unmute at the end if you would like to talk.
Yoga Nidra is a deeply restorative and healing process – at the end of it you may feel as though you have taken a nap and you may feel like rolling into bed afterwards!

About me...

I was first introduced to Yoga due to a back injury in my early 20’s. Each class felt like an hour-long treatment for my back and it wasn’t long before I noticed the pain reducing and my spine mobility increasing - I began to feel physically stronger.

But there was something else. I noticed that the yoga classes were having some kind of non-physical effect on me too - something that I couldn’t quite put my finger on – something which calmed and soothed my mind, made my heart feel happier and my ‘soul’ feel brighter and lighter.

I was curious to learn how and why the practice of yoga could have such a myriad of benefits on body mind and soul, and so I trained to be a yoga teacher in 2010, followed by a post graduate yoga teaching qualification in ‘Yoga for Back Care’. I know I shall remain a yoga student throughout my life.

I now enjoy sharing the gift of yoga and meditation with others and I delight in being a part of others’ yoga journeys whilst they too reap the benefits of their own yoga practice.

I believe yoga should be accessible for everyone and every body. My classes are suitable for all levels - beginners are welcome. Please let me know before class if there is anything I should be aware of (injuries etc).
