Yin Yoga and Relaxation

What it's all about?
Yin yoga works deeply within the body to help return you to your current natural range of mobility and is the ideal antidote to a busy week. Using props to support our practice, we hold poses for up to 5 minutes, creating a greater ‘stress’ on the connective tissue and leading to a deeper release of tension and tightness. Ultimately this leads to improved flexibility and mobility, over time.

What's the class like?
This class is slow! We begin class with a guided pranayama (breathing practice) to prepare the mind and body for the yoga poses to follow. The breath remains a focus throughout the class, as within each posture we use it to gauge how we are experiencing the poses. This class takes place from a mostly seated or reclining position, and we make use of a variety of props, which are all available. Finally, the class ends with a seasonal yoga nidra to encourage deep relaxation and offer you the chance to switch off completely.

What level is the class aimed at?
This class is suitable for complete beginners. Everyone is encouraged to work at their own level and within their own comfort zones.

Yoga by Gillian

Gillian fell in love with yoga at 21, when she attended her first Ashtanga class in Dublin, Ireland. From here, she established a regular at home practice which mainly focussed on the physical aspects of yoga. Throughout studying for her BA in Public Relations and Psychology, Gillian leaned more heavily on her yoga practice to see her through exams, assignments and job seeking. An unexpected redundancy led her to complete a PGDip in Primary Education with the University of Strathclyde, and to embark on a life-changing career as a Primary School Teacher.

This change in direction, highlighted the spiritual aspects of a yoga practice and she began to learn more about meditation and pranayama. While completing her RYT 200 hours in 2016, Gillian began to incorporate meditation and pranayama into her daily yoga practice. The vast benefits of this system have helped her to deal with the challenging job of educating young people and keeping up with the ever-changing world of education.

Gillian has also completed a 50-hour Yin Yoga Teacher training course, and is a qualified Children’s Yoga Teacher. Her home practice has evolved and she regularly attends early morning Mysore practice to supplement her continuous professional and personal development. Gillian regularly shares the benefits of yoga and meditation with the children she teaches.

Her classes are relaxed and informal, with a strong focus on the basics – pranayama, foundations of postures and relaxation. Gillian understands first-hand the many benefits a regular yoga, pranayama and meditation practice can bring; and she is keen to share this with anyone willing to stop and listen!
