Yoga for Trauma Class

I’m Sue Tupling (spiritual name, Shraddhakiran), the founder of Embodied Living, I am a BWY qualified yoga teacher (Yoga Academy) and a Satyananda certified yoga teacher. I have done over 500 hours of core training. I am also a UKCP registered psychotherapist and executive and therapeutic coach. I studied buddhism from my early 20s find the path of soto zen and in my mid 30s found raja yoga. I have been initiated as a sanyassin (seeker) by Swami Niranjananda in Bihar, India. I have been teaching yoga for 12 years.

My approach to yoga is informed by the classical system of Satyananda yoga and inspired by my own experience of the power of yoga to change my life in a deep and transforming way.

My classes involves gentle yoga postures, breathing practices, and yoga nidra, a deep relaxation technique aimed at relaxing both the body and the mind.

The class consists roughly of:

40 minutes – Asana (Postures)
20 minutes – Pranayama (Breathing)
30 minutes – Meditation / Yoga Nidra

Satyananda Yoga is an integral form of yoga covering a wide range of techniques, from cleansing practices through postures, breathing and relaxation to meditation.

However in the beginners’ classes, approximately half of the class is spent on physical postures, and the remainder of the time is used in breathing and relaxation practices.
In the first year, the aims are:
• to develop body awareness
• to increase strength & flexibility in muscles & joints
• to improve awareness of breath and technique of breathing
• to cultivate the ability to relax at will

Most students report that they find this style of yoga is particularly valuable for stress reduction.
If one were to look at the spectrum of yoga classes on offer in the UK, Satyananda Yoga would fall towards the meditative/relaxation end of the scale - as distinct from the very physical types of yoga.
