| Title: Astanga Yoga with Dan Levitas |
Dan Levitas is a life-long yoga practitioner who teaches Astanga yoga, a system developed by Sri K Pattabhi Jois, involving synchronising the breath with a progressive series of postures. This vigorous system detoxifies muscles and organs, improves circulation and creates a light, strong body and calm mind. Dan is an embodiment of the powerful effects of this yoga system. Dan is also a trained classical guitarist and will play during relaxation sessions (as well as after dinner). Dan: “My focus – with the yoga asanas, meditation and self-hypnosis – will be to calm the system and create total ease in your life”. Student comment: “The yoga was excellent. I have been practising for three years and had no idea I could be bound and positioned into such groovy shapes.” Jillian All our yoga holidays are designed for all levels. | Title: Dynamic Flow & Yin Yoga with Dina Cohen |
Dina Cohen teaches Dynamic Flow yoga which balances the dynamism and power of a strong flowing form with the softness and stillness of Yin yoga. Years ago, when she started to explore yoga, “I was naturally drawn to stronger Asthanga forms. But it was the slower, more passive practices that soothed my nerves and quieted my mind”. So her Dynamic Flow teaching fuses the best of these – Ashtanga, Hatha and Yin yoga – to create a comprehensive practice that increases flexibility, tones and strengthens the body and soothes the mind. Dina: “I love yoga because it makes me feel more alive, more present in my body and more comfortable in my own skin. I love creating a balanced practice that is both calming and energising.” Student comment: “It was probably the best holiday I have ever had! The food, people, sunshine, pool, plenty relaxation, and Dina’s yoga – she’s fab - everything was perfect” Amber All our yoga holidays are designed for all levels. | Title: Hatha Yoga with Helena Bingham |
Helena Bingham has been with us at The Hill from the beginning and is a very special yoga teacher. Her philosophy is very in tune with The Hill’s: “My life philosophy is the acceptance of ‘what is’, exactly as it is, and about letting go of all our dramas”. Helena’s foundation is Hatha Yoga, but she mixes different styles and flavours of yoga into her classes. She creates lots of space between the asanas to encourage letting go. This is gentle, opening yoga: it’s not too serious and you don’t even have to be able to touch your toes. Helena will guide you into feeling free, relaxed, internally stroked, and to then to return home with a true sense of stillness and calm. Helena: “For me – in yoga and in life – less is more. When you truly slow down and listen to your body, doing what feels right naturally creates a vast openness, relaxation and freedom.” Student comment: “Helena is a beautiful person and the classes felt so easy and yet I really improved and became more flexible. I loved it.” Sherina All our yoga holidays are designed for all levels. | Title: Astanga & Yin Yoga with LaurelSutherland |
Laurel is a dedicated and inspiring Astanga teacher and a direct student of Sri K Pattabhi Jois, the originator of this famous yoga style that synchronises the breath with a progressive series of postures. She also teaches Yin yoga and meditation to balance the strong asanas of Astanga. Laurel is passionate about encouraging her students to deepen their self-awareness, and working with their own inner intelligence. Her teaching draws on extensive experience of yoga asana, anatomy and physiology, cranio-sacral therapy, meditation and explorations in consciousness. “I love being with my students as they explore their edges, meeting them wherever they're at, not taking any of it too seriously. I love how all the lessons we learn on the mat can be directly applied to our lives off the mat.” Student comment: “Laurel’s teaching is inspiring. She’s fun, approachable and very calming. She’s motivated me to carry on with yoga when I return home” Anna All our yoga holidays are designed for all levels. | Title: Family Week |
We used to do just one family week. By popular demand, we’re doing two consecutive weeks this year. And, following a feature in The Times in September, the weeks currently have just a few spaces left. This is a rare chance to have a holistic holiday as a family. Drag along the less keen members of the family with the promise of the pool and pizza. Then get stuck into yoga classes for the parents in the morning, whilst the children are taught yoga or entertained separately. Spend some time together during the day, and then wave the kids off to an afternoon yoga session whilst you have some time for yourselves. There’s a unique atmosphere on The Hill during Family Week (and very different to other weeks). It’s a little like going away with friends and their families and renting a house together. Only you’ve hired a top Italian chef and some international yoga teachers to keep you all happy. You’ll enjoy the organic wine and delicious vegetarian food, looking out over the Italian hills as the children scream around, looking after one another, and popping back for some pasta and, yes, chips and ketchup and ice cream. They’ll swing in the hammocks, bounce on the trampoline and play table football as you sit and read a book. And, of course, you’ll go away feeling more relaxed, more supple and with children that know that ‘the tree’ isn’t just something to climb. Guest comment: “An inspiring, moving, sense-awakening time. Having the time to myself in the mornings to do Yoga with the other grown-ups was an essential and beautiful counterbalance to the liveliness of being families. I loved the atmosphere you have created. The divine fresh food. The pool amidst the trees. The dome was enormous fun being there with children dancing, hurling pillows, being exuberant.” Lisa The price for adults is £695, with a 30% discount for children aged 4-11 and a 20% discount for children aged 12-16.We used to do just one family week. | Title: Shadow Yoga with Tim Cummins |
We are pleased to welcome Tim Cummins for the first time this year. We were fascinated by the yoga he teaches, a very special branch of hatha yoga called Shadow Yoga. Having trained in and taught Shivenanda and then Astanga yoga for years, Tim fell for Shadow Yoga. In a sentence, Shadow Yoga frees up energy (prana) in the body to dissolve restrictions and stuck areas, or ‘shadows’. Tim will introduce you to the principles of Shadow Yoga, looking at how you move your body and support yourself from your core. Developing this internal strength is integral to the system as is correct breathing. Most people hold an enormous amount of tension in their hips which blocks the flow of energy to the legs (and can lead to problems in the hips in later life). So expect to give your hips some serious stretching and unblocking. The breathing techniques will calm your emotions & centre your mind whilst discouraging any build up of stiffness in the body. Tim: “Unique to this system of yoga, is the practice of a ‘prelude form’, which could be thought of as a warm-up sequence (though in truth, it is very much more than this). It is a dynamic sequence of flowing movements which contain elements common to yoga, Indian & Chinese martial arts & classical Indian dance. It is simple, enjoyable, but also challenging!” Student comment: ‘Tim's classes are inspiring and challenging. His dedication, vision and individual attention encourages each student to realise their full potential. I greatly appreciate the insight and clarity he has brought to my yoga practice.' | Title: Scaravelli with Catherine Annis |
Catherine Annis teaches a gentle form of Hatha yoga developed by Vanda Scaravelli which focuses on deepening physical awareness and alignment to reveal and release the natural freedom of the body. It is a soft but powerful internal yoga, which uses the breath and gravity to allow the spine to unfold like a wave, leading to the opening and energising of the whole body. Catherine: “The deep awareness that develops with Scaravelli yoga soon begins to inform our everyday movement too, becoming a form of meditation on every experience both inside and outside of ourselves. I love to see people slowly getting in touch with their own bodies and power”. Student comment: "Many thanks. Always enjoy your classes. They are like a journey around your own body."
