SMYL Sports Massage and Yoga Lessons

IHi, my name is Sarah Barron and I am SMYL, Sports Massage and Yoga Lessons.
Why SMYL? My hope is that SMYL’s offerings will help make you smile by aiding in the release of built up tension and stress in your body, after all smiles are infectious and if you smile the whole world smiles with you.

What I do:

Yoga
I first took up regular yoga lessons in 1997, and was taught by a wonderful teacher called Johann Prosser. She started my love of yoga with her teaching methods which comprised of expert instruction and fun! Next, I was guided by a teacher called Terri Hilder. Both of these women inspired me to become a yoga teacher, and in 2004 I took my training with Yoga Scotland under the tutelage of Cathy Swan and Jackie Le Broq.

I love yoga because I find that it has given me a deeper awareness of myself and my body and also a relaxing and peaceful place to escape to when everything in life is a bit hectic, but AA Milne says it better than me:

The reason I took up teaching was to share this means of finding peace, quiet and awareness.
My teaching style is influenced by Krishnamcharya, Iyengar, Gitananda, Yin Yoga and Sivanada but is firmly grounded in the guidelines for yoga practice outlined by Krishnamacharya and his son Desikichar. I teach what I enjoy and what my classes respond to. I think it’s very important to engage, communicate and understand individual requirements. Just as important is to convery the importance of awareness: awareness of breathing, movement and mind. But more important of all yoga should be fun!

"Another aspect of yoga has to do with our actions. Yoga therefore also means acting in such a way that all of our attention is directed toward the activity in which we are currently engaged. " ― T.K.V. Desikachar, The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Practice

I have taught in a number of places and now have a regular class in Bo’ness Town Hall on a Wednesday evening.

Since my initial training I have qualified as a yoga for pregnancy teacher and have branched out to offer one-to-one yoga lessons too.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is a complementary therapy to yoga. An individual can practice Yoga to help maintain mobility and flexibility and I can use Soft Tissue Therapy techniques to help the individual to remove restrictions that reduce mobility, movement and flexibility.

As a yoga teacher I am always observing the members of the class noticing limitations in movement or difficulties that they may have. Often people are sent to yoga classes by medical professionals to help with problems such as low back pain. Instinctively I want help these people, however yoga teacher training did not really equip me with the information needed to help these people as much as I wanted to. With the intention of improving my anatomy knowledge about 2 years ago I completed Gary Carter’s Anatomy for Yoga Teachers course. I learned from this that dehydrated fascia (tissue which is everywhere) can be the cause of some limitations, this responds well to soft tissue therapy, this in turn compelled me to study for and obtain an HNC in Soft Tissue Therapy. Now here I am at the stage of setting up this business where I hope to use Sports Massage and other massage techniques as a complement to my yoga teaching.

The Future
My practice as a yoga practitioner/teacher and massage therapist will continue to evolve. I already plan to continue my training in myofascial techniques, thai therapies and I have a long term goal of becoming a Yoga Therapist.
